80s Blockbusters for a Buck Series

Top Gun - June 29

Raiders of the Lost Ark - July 11

Back to the Future - August 10

Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride

Back to the Future - August 10

Contemporary high schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) doesn't have the most pleasant of lives. Browbeaten by his principal at school, Marty must also endure the acrimonious relationship between his nerdy father (Crispin Glover) and his lovely mother (Lea Thompson), who in turn suffer the bullying of middle-aged jerk Biff (Thomas F. Wilson), Marty's dad's supervisor. The one balm in Marty's life is his friendship with eccentric scientist Doc (Christopher Lloyd), who at present is working on a time machine. Accidentally zapped back into the 1950s, Marty inadvertently interferes with the budding romance of his now-teenaged parents. Our hero must now reunite his parents-to-be, lest he cease to exist in the 1980s. It won't be easy, especially with the loutish Biff, now also a teenager, complicating matters. Beyond its dazzling special effects, the best element of Back to the Future is the performance of Michael J. Fox, who finds himself in the quagmire of surviving the white-bread 1950s with a hip 1980s mindset.

Monday, October 2

All Seating is First Come, First Served.

Hello, my name is Sean Patton. I’m a comedian based in Los Angeles and New York, by way of New Orleans. I began doing stand-up in the Crescent City and have since performed in comedy clubs across the US and Canada. I’ve also performed at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2011), Just for Laughs Chicago (2013), Just for Laughs Toronto (2013), and Just for Laughs Montreal (2008, 2010, 2012). I’ve performed on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham (2009), Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (2010), and Conan (2011, 2013). 2013 also marked the release of my Comedy Central Half Hour. More recently, I’ve been on @midnight (2014, 2015) and will be on the second seasons of The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail (2015) and This Is Not Happening (2015). As for acting, I've appeared on IFC'S Maron and Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer.

Those are the things I’ve done that I’m proud of. For a list of things I’ve done that I’m not so proud of... yeah right, you ain’t never gonna know that! I love what I do, some of you will too (thanks!), and some of you will not (but thanks for coming).

I want to share myself with you, whomever you are.

"I’ve seen him perform more than a dozen sets, and he’s killed every time. He’s dynamite, even with ordinary material, turning standard Brooklyn hipster jokes into a stomping, roaring tour de force, and elevating a bit about sex-performance anxiety into high-stakes comedy. [...] He’s the rare comic who goes over as well in a comedy club as in a bar basement."

CLOWNVIS PRESLEY - King of Clowns!
https://www.facebook.com/ClownvisPresley/
http://www.clownvismafia.com/

The L.A. Weekly calls Clownvis Presley "Better than the real Elvis". A bold statement indeed, but when it comes to quick wit, unique songs, and genuine showmanship, its safe to say Clownvis has earned the title, "The King of Clowns". From the sideshow at Coney Island to the hottest comedy events in Los Angeles and everything in between, Clownvis is constantly bringing his unique blend of comedy, song, and magic to stages across America.

When not sharing his love for entertainment on stage, the King of Clowns has been known to pop up on national television and stir up excitement on such shows as America's Got Talent (NBC) and Judge Karen's Court (BET). Hilarious internet videos and side splitting appearances on radio shows and podcasts also help to please the ever growing Clownvis Presley fan base.

Clownvis is currently a staple on the booming Los Angeles alt comedy scene. His monthly show held at the famous Hollywood Improv Comedy Club sells out regularly and has recently drawn the attention of such high profile media outlets as the L.A. Weekly and TMZ.

Performing alongside big acts like Little Richard, Neil Hamburger, Dresden Dolls, and Jewel have made Clownvis' legendary stage show more in demand than ever. The King of Clowns shines brightest when he's in the spotlight, and in addition to scheduling live shows in Los Angeles and abroad, he is currently working on a live DVD, a series of comedy shorts, and his own internet podcast! Viva Clownvis!

*Originally from the UK, Adam Burke began performing stand-up after writing a piece on comedy for a Chicago magazine. Before long, Burke became a fixture at Midwestern shows and showcases. His absurdist, verbose comedy is long on metaphor and analogy and short on common sense. He has appeared on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, the podcasts Doug Loves Movies & The Benson Interruption, the Bob and Tom show, WGN 720 AM radio, Put Your Hands Together, and many more podcasts and shows. Adam has appeared at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland OR, as part of the Just for Laughs Chicago festival for four years running, and at the local stage of Funny Or Die's Oddball Comedy Festival. In addition, he has opened for a wide variety of comedians including Marc Maron, Jeff Ross, Hannibal Burress, John Mulaney, Hari Kondabolu, Maria Bamford, Michael Ian Black, Kumail Nanjiani, John Oliver, Tracy Morgan, Aziz Ansari, and many more. Burke released his debut album Universal Squirrel Theory on A Special Thing Records in 2012. He was voted Best Standup in Chicago by readers of the Chicago Reader in 2014.

In a dystopian future, a cross country automobile race requires contestants to run down innocent pedestrians to gain points that are tallied based on each kill's brutality.

More Movie Info:

Cult hero Paul Bartel directed this low-budget satire in which America's passion for cars, violence, and sporting events are finally brought together in one convenient package. In the not-so-distant future, the United States has become a totalitarian regime overseen by the charming but sinister Mr. President (Sandy McCallum), who, in order to satisfy the masses' need for entertainment (and to quench their thirst for violence), has created a new national sport -- the Death Race, a nationwide road rally in which the winner is not determined by who finishes first, but by who scores the most points along the way by running over hapless pedestrians. Aspiring champions Machine Gun Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone), Calamity Jane (Mary Woronov), Nero the Hero (Martin Kove), and Matilda the Hun (Roberta Collins) are all looking to take the top honors away from Frankenstein (David Carradine), a half-man/half-machine who has been built to be the best racer on Earth and can outrun and outkill anyone on the circuit. However, not everyone likes the Death Race, and revolutionary leader Thomasina Paine (Harriet Medin) wants to sabotage the event in the name of restoring democracy; her plan is to foil Frankenstein's expected victory by smuggling her daughter Annie (Simone Griffeth) into Frankenstein's race car as his navigator. Featuring David Carradine at the height of his Kung Fu fame (and Sylvester Stallone a year before Rocky), Death Race 2000 was a major drive-in hit in 1975; Bartel and Carradine teamed up for another road race movie, Cannonball, a year later, and a semi-sequel, Death Sport, appeared in 1978. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
