VOCAB presents: Release and Prelim for Indy Pride Poet Laureate

We are excited to be apart of the journey of so many artists in Indianapolis. This month's show will be featuring the latest releases from some of our favorite artists.

Sylvia Thomas with the release of DIVINE (written by Sylvia Thomas, foreword and edited by Elle Roberts) is a series of poems reflected on my experiences with sex, religion, love, divinity, and my trans body. In order to heal my spirit, faith, and womanhood from the violence I have experienced, my own self-love became my religion

Gritty of Gritty & The Craftsman with his latest release

Join VOCAB, Iconoclast, and Indy Pride as we band together to hunt for Indianapolis' very first Pride Poet Laureate. Kicking off as a portion of VOCAB's renowned open mic event, this series will take the form of a literary death match tournament. Anyone interested in competing must perform at VOCAB's open mic to be considered by a panel of judges and advance to the next round. Those selected to move on must appear again before judges at Iconoclast's event Thursday, May 16th. When our final few are chosen, they'll face each other one last time at a curated reading, no open mic, where each will feature for 15 minutes. This is when YOU, the audience will pick our winner! Follow along with each event and meet some of Indianapolis' premier poetry community at two of the best open mics in the city. Or if you dare, COMPETE for your shot at the title, The 2019 Poet Laureate of Indy Pride.

To participate in the prelims for the poetry death match for Indy Pride you must email esmith@indypride.org Signup is limited to 12 people and you must email to participate

Joshua Powell + the Great Train Robbery (indy)
Untangled from sonic hexes of clay and blurry eyes, the kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of rock witchery, sloping up heavenward with cosmic channeling of belted protest breath and sweat that fills a reflection pond in your hallucinating spirit's angsty core.

MOIRA (ohio)
Lush violet dream pop like the cat sleep of Sunday afternoon inside a synthesized mewl, cascades of polyphonic charm telekinetics, a holy trio of aural bedroom pioneering and rectitude.

Mister Moon (ohio) -
Build your celestial nest in the echoing chamber between two syncopated battle drums, whistling octaval birdsong beneath the tintinnabulation of indie rock reimagined as everything worth listening to in universal stereo.

Costaki Economopoulos

One Night Only.

with special guest Lucas Waterfill and Erin Carr

Doors 7pm, Comedy 8pm. $15 advance

BIO:

In the spring of 1993 Costaki was doing graduate work at the University of Georgia. He spent most of his time hammering out a thesis on the influence of political satire on our feelings about government. His off time was spent honing his stand-up skills in pizza joints and bars around town. When he had to turn down a couple of gigs to work on the paper, it made his stomach hurt. He hung in there, finished the thesis, got his master’s degree, and within a year was a fulltime comic on the road. He has been criss-crossing the country telling jokes ever since.

His humor has been described as smart, pointed, hip, sharp, insightful, socially relevant, and gut-laugh funny. A fellow comic once referred to Costaki as a “casually brilliant joke philosopher.” He weighs in on everything from parenting and football, to pirates and rice cakes. And his light swagger, playful squint, and wry smile tell you that perhaps there’s more to this multi-layered joke than you first recognized.

Costaki began to make some noise in the business by reaching the finals of the Seattle Comedy Competition, where he was discovered and invited to the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival. He’s been back to Montreal twice since then. And he was just one of ten finalists in Comedy Central’s Laugh Riots national talent search.

You may have seen him recently on a Showtime Special. Or on Comedy.TV, Last Comic Standing, or NickMom Night Out. Over the years, Costaki has performed in all 50 states, covering the country’s best clubs, hundreds of beautiful theaters, dozens of colleges, and some of the worst bars in America.

Also a talented writer, Costaki’s jokes have appeared on The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show, and Best Damn Sports Show Period. He was a writer for BET, where he was staffed on two of their hit shows. He wrote jokes for Bette Midler’s Kiss My Brass Tour. Costaki spent Spring Break one year in Cancun writing on the MTV show Parental Approval. He also wrote daily for The Complete Sheet, a DJ prep service that goes out to almost 500 stations worldwide.

But he is easily best known for regular segment on the syndicated Bob & Tom Radio Show that reaches some five million people in 140 markets. And that segment has spun off into “Quick Snaps,” the all-NFL topical version, which has a weekly home during the season on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. “Quick Snaps” is also a podcast, and appears weekly on several independent radio shows all over the country. This national exposure has opened the door to Costaki’s dream: people coming to see his live performances “on purpose.”

After a performance with Jake Johannsen, Costaki’s mother said, “You were better than that other guy.” And really, is there anything more to say after that?

Based on 22-year-old Cameron Crowe's undercover exposé on life in a Southern California public high school, this groundbreaking effort presents alternately poignant and funny looks at episodes from the lives of some of the students as they prepare themselves for life in the outside world. Many popular stars made their debuts in the film, including Anthony Edwards, Nicolas Cage and Eric Stolz. It is also the film that made Sean Penn a star for his portrayal of the dopey passive/aggressive surfer Jeff Spicoli.

Set in 1977, back when sex was safe, pleasure was a business and business was booming, idealistic porn producer Jack Horner aspires to elevate his craft to an art form. Horner discovers Eddie Adams, a hot young talent working as a busboy in a nightclub, and welcomes him into the extended family of movie-makers, misfits and hangers-on that are always around. Adams' rise from nobody to a celebrity adult entertainer is meteoric, and soon the whole world seems to know his porn alter ego, "Dirk Diggler." Now, when disco and drugs are in vogue, fashion is in flux and the party never seems to stop, Adams' dreams of turning sex into stardom are about to collide with cold, hard reality. Featuring an amazing, award-winning cast, including Mark Wahlberg ("The Departed," "We Own the Night"), Burt Reynolds ("Deliverance"), John C. Reilly ("Magnolia"), Julianne Moore ("Children of Men"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("State & Main"), Don Cheadle ("Talk to Me"), William H. Macy ("Bobby"), and many more.

Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried). While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she's violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron (Jonathan Bennett), who is charming, good looking...and Regina's former boyfriend. It isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath, and Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her. Joining Tina Fey in the supporting cast are fellow SNL players Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, and Tim Meadows. The screenplay for Mean Girls was based in part on Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends and Other Realities of Adolescence, a book by professional youth counselor Rosalind Wiseman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
