LITTRELL with Sophie DeFrench, Kristina Sharpe and DJ Stylistic

LITTRELL with Sophie DeFrench, Kristina Sharpe and DJ Stylistic

Indianapolis’ own LITTRELL is excited to announce an epic hometown performance at the White Rabbit Cabaret happening on May, 23rd, 2024. Support acts include Sophie DeFrench, Kristina Sharpe, and DJ Stylistic. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $24. 21 and over only.

Dark and ethereal, LITTRELL’s brand of dark pop/alt rock/trip hop is the most arresting and original music you’re likely to find this year or any other. Their songs offer an experience that’s hypnotic and deeply meaningful. The White Rabbit show will feature a five-piece lineup consisting of Lindsay Littrell on vocals, Garrett Langebartels on lead guitar, Scotch Swango (of November Swim Club) on second guitar, Steve Bradley (of Kingflower) on drums, and Liz Legge (of gliiitches) on bass. Early indications predict a night of beyond-epic original music with the power to move every soul in the room.

Opening for LITTRELL will be high-value singer-songwriters Sophie DeFrench and Kristina Sharpe, who will both be performing with full bands. DJ Stylistic will kick off the evening and be spinning between sets. Every savvy music fan in Indianapolis will be there, too, officially making this a night to remember.

For tickets, click here! Early bird tickets are automatically 15% off until April 1.

ABOUT LITTRELL:

Dark and ethereal, LITTRELL’s brand of dark pop/alt rock/trip hop is the most arresting and original music you’re likely to find this year or any other. The Indianapolis/LA-based group excels at being compelling, cinematic, and unforgettable. Core members Lindsay Littrell (lead vocals, keyboards, synths, percussion, songwriting, production) and Garrett Langebartels (lead guitar, bass, synths, percussion, engineering, production) have found something that’s both gritty and magical in the way their creative personalities intertwine that will quickly pull you into their often-hypnotic world and make you want to stay.

LITTRELL has already released a string of singles, the most recent being “Love Songs,” which dropped in February 2024. Much new music is in the works, as Lindsay Littrell (they/them) is a prolific and productive songwriter with a lot to say. Their artistry sits upon a lifetime of influences. They began their journey young surrounded by early contemporary Christian music as the child of a Tennessee preacher and later came under the spell of secular greats like Prince, Janet Jackson, Sting/The Police, Rickie Lee Jones, Radiohead and Meshell Ndegeocello. Lindsay has the rare ability to combine their inspirations, build on them, and create music that sounds like no one but themself.

Garrett Langebartels (he/him) comes from a musical family in Indiana. He was drawn to the guitar and songwriting as a small child and began his engineering career on a sketchy recording setup as a teen. His central genres are blues, folk, and indie rock but he’s been molded in one way or another by everything from bluegrass to rap. He’s a skilled recordist and multi-instrumentalist who makes an ideal partner for Lindsay. As a unit, the two musicians are deep and inventive. They connect in all the right places and complement in all the others.

Musically, LITTRELL has been compared to Kate Bush, Lana del Ray, and Portishead but to sum them up so simply is to leave a lot out. Their music is honest, human, powerful, vulnerable, and raw. It invites listeners to go inside of themselves to see what they find. The songs are gutsy, gifted, and show an intense commitment to authentic expression.

Taken as a whole, LITTRELL stands poised for a major breakout. They’re making the music the world needs right now and fearlessly giving it to us all. Fans of smart, sensual, and emotive new music need to discover LITTRELL at once and follow where they lead. You’ll be glad you did.

ABOUT SOPHIE DEFRENCH:

Add Midwest noir, metaphor, and soul together, and you might find artist Sophie DeFrench spinning in the middle. A prolific songwriter, Sophie uses kaleidoscopic layers to reveal in her music both the delicacy and the hurt of human experience; listeners find in her someone who understands. Be sure to follow Sophie’s glow as she lights the way through song and storytelling. Sophie, who works on some of the vibiest collabs you can find, will be backed by a full band as she brings her stunning songs to us live.

ABOUT KRISTINA SHARPE:

Kristina Sharpe is an incredible singer, songwriter, classically-trained pianist, record producer, and mixing engineer. Her combination of classical piano wizardry, effortless vocals and tactful storytelling have all the makings of success. Kristina released her album Been There in 2023 and will be bringing her dark, moody, and utterly cool work to the stage, backed by the distinctive alt. rock/grunge band Sunset Etc.

ABOUT DJ STYLISTIC:

Not sticking to the norm, Stylistic gives his audience a full spectrum of genres during his sets, ranging from Hip Hop, RnB, Neo Soul, House Music, Techno, Funk n Soul Reggae and much more. His modern stylish style captivates and engages his audience. Stylistic takes his craft seriously by studying the greats, taking his audience through a journey through music by finding ways to combine a wide variety of genre and blending them together to make his own composition. DJ Stylistic has worked with everyone from Naughty by Nature and SWV to Jason Derulo and Kesha and his long list of clients include the Indiana Pacers and the Chreece Music Festival.

Brought to you by Stranger Attractions Presents and Spellbound!

We are doing something super fun and different in February 2024: we will be recording the entire set by the band Angel-Maker from the mixing board and pressing it to vinyl, just like we did in 2023 for the bands Tallies and Twice Dark! We'll be pressing it in a strictly limited, super-short run of 100 copies on eco colored vinyl with full artwork and sleeve! You can pre-order your copy in advance for an additional $25 when you purchase your Spellbound ticket ($35 gets you entry and a super-limited LP). If you choose to purchase later (if any copies are left) they will be available for $30 at Indy CD & Vinyl. Please allow 3 months for the mixing, mastering, and pressing of the record. When the record is done you will be notified to pick them up at Indy CD & Vinyl or to pay for shipping to you.

We plan to do this for live bands booked at Spellbound going forward, for a continuing series called "Live at Spellbound" that will become a lasting legacy of collectible records you can keep as a reminder of the story of live music at our dark alternative dance night. There will be a connecting design theme on all the records and you could be the first one on your block to collect them all!

REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be given unless there is a medical emergency or testing positive for COVID-19.

ABOUT IASOS & Crystal VIsta:

Pioneer musician and inter-dimensional being Iasos created Crystal Vista as a thesis in the sights and sounds of the New Age at the time of its release in 1981.

The famous philosopher Alan Watts declared, “Iasos is doing the classical music of the New Age.” By re-issuing this seminal work on VHS format, Astro Nautico points to what is timelessly classical about Iasos’s sounds, while celebrating the novelty of a pivotal moment: that time when New Age deepened itself with a visual dimension.

A synergistic 30-minute video program by Iasos, Crystal Vista comprises Iasos’ visualizations to four of his original musical compositions. The musical-visual language of Crystal Vista narrates an other-worldy journey through vibrant special effects and heavenly images, creating a captivating and uplifting mythos. It is a just accompaniment for Iasos’ music, which features shimmering harps and cymbal brushes flickering over resounding synth bass swells and sweeps of resonance that wash the mind like a cloth.

With Crystal Vista, Iasos’ intended to create a vessel to transport viewers on a journey through inter-dimensional spaces. To achieve this goal he enlisted the assistance of most of the top visionary new-age painters of that time period - blending their images with nature photography, special effects videography, and pictures of celestial bodies captured by satellites.

The scope of Crystal Vista as a project was unprecedented at the time. There is much to be appreciated today in its peaceful grandeur. On release, it won awards: first prize in ‘Video Art’ at the national Santa Cruz Video Festival and honors at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 1984 for “One of the most original programs of the year”. Today, it seeks nothing but the award of your attention. You will be thrilled to discover what dimensions it opens. The past, the origin time, when historical and technological conditions intersected to make this moment possible; or the future: what optimism this art contains and what of that containment may, through us, be released again.

This event is SOLD OUT

You might call 70+ local bands covering iconic acts across five stages in a single night a fever dream, magic, or controlled chaos, but we call it Tonic Ball. We also call it the best night of the year.

Tonic Ball brings together Indy’s best bands and musicians on the Friday before Thanksgiving for an annual music festival at venues in Indy’s Fountain Square neighborhood in support of Second Helpings, a Central Indiana nonprofit fighting hunger from all angles. Since its inception in 2002, Tonic Ball has served as the launchpad for a supergroup, encouraged countless unique collaborations, and inspired at least one marriage.

Musicians donate their time and talent, so every Tonic Ball ticket supports Second Helpings’ Food Rescue, Hunger Relief, and Culinary Job Training programs. Your Tonic Ball ticket helps more than 100 Central Indiana nonprofits who receive more than one million free meals from Second Helpings throughout the year. So grab a ticket, and do it quickly because Tonic Bell sells out long before sound check.

The real thing, people." -Billboard
Martin Sexton returns with what Rolling Stone calls his “soul-marinated voice,” acoustic guitar, and a suitcase full of heartfelt songs.

The 2023 Tour takes Martin across North America in support of his latest ep 2020 Vision
(produced by 3-time Grammy nominee John Alagia (Lukas Nelson, John Mayer, Dave
Matthews) as well as reinventing his own classics for these critically-acclaimed solo

television series such as Scrubs, Parenthood, Masters of Sex, Sprung, and in numerous

About Courtney Marie Andrews:

Listen | Watch Video

On the honey shores of Cape Cod in a beach shack, Courtney Marie Andrews found self-love and her voice.  Every morning, she’d walk 6-8 miles around the back trails of an island and meditate on her life, perusing old memories and patterns like browsing a used bookshop. That summer of introspection led her to a joyous sense of beginnings and ends. When she let love for herself in, she therein let the outside love in, too—the summer feeling, the swaying cypress, the full moon, and the possibility of healthy love. This phase came only right after one of her darkest, though, where being alone with oneself was the most terrifying thing you could do. After more than a decade on the road, the Phoenix-born songwriter, poet, and painter finally had the space to process all the highs and lows of a life of constants. She was finally ready to make a record of triumph, while not completely forgetting the years that made her.

That record is Loose Future.

After committing to penning a song a day, Courtney found the sounds of summer flowing through her writing—the romance, and possibility, and the free sounds. Collecting an album’s worth of material, she tied up some loose ends in Bisbee, Arizona, her “soul place” and beckoned Sam Evian to come and produce a record. Her guideposts were lots of harmonies and alternative percussion. The rest was pure exploration. At Flying Cloud Recordings in New York, she dipped in the creek every morning before proceeding. She wanted to embody the feeling of letting love in. Taking the dip is what letting love in feels like. Sometimes you plunge, and sometimes you walk slowly in.

This summer feeling materializes on the first single “Satellite” where her shimmering vocals orbit delicate acoustic guitar, a soft beat, and buzzing intergalactic synths. As if bottling rays of July sun, it glows with the affirmation, “I like to see you shine—my favorite piece of the sky.”

“I’ve written a lot of love songs, but there’s always a tinge of heartbreak,” she explains. “I wanted to write a love song with no caveats, which I’ve never allowed myself to do. A satellite is so mysterious to the average person. It’s the idea somebody is floating around your mind. You’re not quite sure why, but you like it.”

Then, there’s “I’ll Be Thinkin On You.” A bombastic beat echoes as an organ underscores her lovestruck delivery as she rethinks the whole concept of “missing” the one you love. “I fell in love with someone,” she goes on. “Instead of saying, ‘I’ll be missing you,’ we’d say, ‘I’ll be thinking on you’. When you’re ‘thinking on’ somebody, it means this person is on your mind and not absent.”

The opener and title track “Loose Future” embodies the core of the album’s message. Her voice rings out through a guitar amp pedal as off-kilter bass lines thump with lush guitar, mirroring the ebb and flow of her constant self-work to reach this point creatively, personally, and spiritually.

“The future is loose,” she notes. “I’m not in denial of the darkness, but I’m trying to allow self-love and acceptance to grow in my life. I’m not covering up the dark either, because we have to fight it constantly. We can welcome goodness and love into our lives to shine on these pockets of darkness.”

“Older Now” blossoms like a sunflower in summer, basking in the long days and enjoying a reprieve from a winter that had long outstayed its welcome.

“I wrote it right after I’d gone on my first date after being single for a long time,” she reveals. “I’m older now and wanted to become a better version of myself. I’m also realizing there are parts of myself that will never change. There are inherent personality traits that feel unchangeable and are imprinted in my DNA. I’m accepting I’m not this textbook version of a person. ‘Older Now’ is a huge representation of the change. I’m ready to not live out familiar patterns of being heartbroken for the sake of being heartbroken.”

Strings and soft guitar stitch together a moody sonic patchwork for “On The Line” as she asks, “Why do I give you the satisfaction of knowing I still care?” Reaching the physical and spiritual apex of summer romance, stark piano and a smoky beat brush up against her dynamic delivery on the rapturous finale “Me and Jerry,” which breaks down simply as “a song about good sex that transcends the physical realm.” Emblematic of her uncanny ability to draw the otherworldly from simplicity, the ethereal “Let Her Go” dreams of “a person who is so free, autonomous, and wonderfully themselves that everybody falls in love with this person.”

Loose Future ultimately represents a high watermark of her unbelievable journey thus far. Committing her life to music from a young age, playing in punk bands in high school before becoming a touring member of Jimmy Eat World at just 18 years old, Courtney went on to release a series of acclaimed albums. She garnered her first GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Americana Album” for 2020’s Old Flowers. Meanwhile, the record closed out 2020 on year-end lists from Good Morning America, Magnet, and Uncut. The New York Times  raved, “Courtney Marie Andrews’s luminous new album, 'Old Flowers,' anatomizes the aftermath of breaking up: loneliness, bittersweet memories, recriminations, regrets, temptations, lessons of experience.” Highlighting “Burlap String,” Rolling Stoneclaimed, “Driven by acoustic guitar, the song brings to mind classic Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, but Andrews’ bell-clear voice and fearless message of introspection are unmistakably her own.” Of the album, Stereogum attested, “up front in all of it is Andrews’ voice, wringing beauty out of pain and self-realization.” Along the way, she also unveiled her debut poetry collection, Old Monarch.

“When you listen to me, I hope you feel good,” she leaves off. “I spent so much of my career relating to the brokenhearted. There will always be that side of me. With this record, I hope you feel love on multiple levels. It doesn’t have to be romantic; it could just be self-love or hope. I’ve come into the full spectrum of my own creativity and selfhood. I want to keep continuing exploring that forever against the backdrop of summer."

About The Dead Tongues:

Listen | Watch Video

After five months of not picking up an instrument, The Dead Tongues’ Ryan Gustafson wanted to get rid of everything that was tied to his identity as a musician. He even thought about changing his name. He was getting ready to throw out old notebooks packedwith years of material but, for some reason, he decided to stop and go through them, just to see if there was anything worth saving. And sure enough, he found some images and lyrics, threads from former selves he didn’t want to lose. Thus was the catalystfor Dust, his fifth and best album as The Dead Tongues.Gustafson recorded Dust in nine days, the fastest he’d ever recorded anything. It was the fastest he’d ever written anything, too –in the past, writing a song would take months, but this time he somehow felt freer, and wanted to have fun. The record was recorded at Sylvan Esso’s studio, Betty’s, in the woods of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He built it out with help from a number of his musician friends -Joe Westerlund (Watchhouse, Megafaun, Califone) on drums, Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) on mandolin, backing vocals from Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Molly Sarlé of MountainMan, among others.Dust is meant to be listened to while taking a night drive, farflung and roving and existential. Somewhere between the expansiveness of American jamband and the banjo-centric folk songwriting of Gustafson’s Appalachia home. Gustafson explains the thematic throughline succinctly: “It’s this idea of uprooting and rebirth and cycles, and the past informing the future, and the future informing the past. There is no single story. Everything is connected."

About Stephen Kellogg:

Listen | Watch Video

I wish I’d known when I started out that the contents of an artist biography ends up being repeated manytimes in the years to come. It can be frustrating to be viewed through an outdated lens. But what’s to be done? The past, including old one-sheets, remains unshakable.

I know you’re a busy person and, chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re here for the updated Cliffs Notes. So I’ll tell you what I’m proud of having done over the last 20 years and you decide for yourself if any of the soundbites interest you.

I was born, raised and am currently residing in New England. I have four kids and married my high school sweetheart. I’ve written about them extensively on all my records. I also put out a book in 2020 called “Objects In The Mirror: Thoughts on a Perfect Life from an Imperfect Person.” It’s a collection of essays about what I’ve found to be the most important aspects of a life well-lived. For better or worse, my live show has morphed into one with a fair amount of comedy baked into the storytelling. I write what I believe to be true and I try to have a sense of humor about the stuff that hurts. My newest record is called Keep It Up, Kid and it comes out December 2, 2022. Side B is a suite of 5 interconnected songs that explore the journey from youth to middle-age. Side A is a note of solidarity to anyone looking for hope in hopeless situations. We are all alone in the world, but it’s nice to feel as though we are not.

There have been some flattering quotes over the years, but the largest publication to offer up a humdinger was Rolling Stone, who in 2019, said I was like, “John Prine fronting the Heartbreakers.” My grandfather taught me not to believe my own propaganda, but I still work hard to fulfill the promise of such heady praise.

In 2013, I delivered a Tedx Talk on job satisfaction and that has led to speaking engagements for some amazing organizations. I’ve also had the honor of performing at a number of children’s hospitals as well as for the U.S military, who gave me an “Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year” award. Those experiences have been enriching and I hope I’ve used my talents for good there. I’ve had some great adventures co-writing too and one of the singles I co-wrote, “Got Soul,” was the title track for Robert Randolph’s Grammy Nominated album of the same title. Although I have, on occasion, cracked the billboard charts, it has been a minute since all that went down, so I’ll just say that there is little that means more to me than the people who show up year after year, record after record. Take care of the art and the art will take care of you.

In closing, I guess what I’m most proud of having done, the thing I’d want people to know about the first two decades of my career, is that I survived with my soul intact. I’ve played more than 2200 concerts, traveled Europe supporting Gregory Alan Isakov and Josh Ritter, sang duets with Adam Duritz and Rosanne Cash. I’ve sold out the 9:30 club, and performed at the Beacon Theater. I’ve made music in spite of the challenges and managed to build a life that resembles that of my listeners in all the ways that matter. I have not accomplished all that I intended for myself, but that’s why I’m playing another hand at the table. That’s the point of Keep It Up, Kid. Thanks for checking out my stuff.

- Stephen Kellogg, April 2022

About The Americans:

Listen | Watch Video

Every few years, musicians arrive on the scene with an undeniably fresh approach to a tried-and-true genre. Showcasing this with unparalleled proficiency is the acclaimed Los Angeles-based Americana band The Americans. Upon hearing Stand True — the band’s forthcoming 11-song, sophomore studio LP (out May 6 via Loose Music) — it’s evident why revered producer T Bone Burnett raved, calling them, “genius twenty-first century musicians that are reinventing American heritage music for this century. And it sounds even better this century.”

The title track and album opener, “Stand True,” showcases the group’s riveting grip on storytelling, dynamics and melodic hooks that leave listeners cemented to their speakers. Patrick Ferris (vocals/guitar), Jake Faulkner (bassist) and Zac Sokolow (guitarist) collide to deliver a moving collection that lands somewhere between Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Nathaniel Rateliff.

Following their 2017 debut album, I’ll Be Yours, The Americans took a step back, regained focus, and went into Big Bad Sound studios in Los Angeles to carve out an album of material that “is more our own than ever before,” the band confirms.

The overall touchstone of Stand True, which the band self-produced, is devotion in the face of loss. And with that, the album’s sophomore single, “Born With A Broken Heart,” solidifies that concept as it showcases an edgier side to the band; a gritty ode to the way romantically wounded people sometimes find one another. “Driving home from gigs, Zac would tune into a Navajo AM radio station out of Window Rock, AZ,” recalls Patrick. “Parts of the song came from some of that music. It feels like driving through Los Angeles at night.”

It was sometime in the 1970s, a decade before front man Patrick Ferris and bassist Jake Faulkner were born, that their mothers met on a train to Woodstock. Patrick and Jake met as children, but they lived in different cities and saw very little of one another before reconnecting in high school.

They got along immediately through their joy for busking (street performing), and pre-war American country and blues. "Nobody I knew liked the same music," recalls Patrick. Jake came to San Francisco from Los Angeles to visit, bringing his guitar and baskets of recording gear. They spent that summer recording homeless street musicians with a mobile unit they lugged around the city, making copies of the recordings for the performers to sell.

Guitarist Zac Sokolow had dropped out of high school and was busking on the streets while working construction in Los Angeles when Jake saw him playing guitar. Jake convinced him to move in and start a band. They spent years digging through obscure records and arcane field recordings, teaching themselves the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, and slide guitar.

Patrick calls this long immersion, during which he created and hosted a radio show, a "purist" phase. "We were suspicious of modern rock music," he says. "When we got together and formed a band, we had to make everything from scratch. We had no template. There was no band we wanted to be like. We were curious if we could create something brand new, summoning the spirit of old blues and country through what we'd learned firsthand, leaving nostalgia behind."

"We write our songs inside-out," says Patrick. "We grab hold of something minuscule and primitive—a simple turn of phrase or an unusual beat—and try to build a song around it. It's inefficient, and hard to write words over, but it's magical when it works."

The band's distinctive, powerful works have captured the attention of a number of stars. They've backed Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Ashley Monroe, and Devendra Banhart, and twice joined Ryan Bingham on national tours. They worked closely with Jack White and T Bone Burnett, joining Nas, Elton John, and Alabama Shakes in the PBS primetime series American Epic.

Their live show, honed over many hundreds of performances, is something to behold. Ron Wray (No Depression) writes, "they’re led by lead singer, guitarist Patrick Ferris, looking like James Dean but even better...Jake Faulkner, with his dark black beard and jaunty hat, dances across stage, lifting his stand-up bass like a dancing partner." Steve Wildsmith (Daily Times) admires their "anthemic guitar hooks and a heartland sense of urgency that’s tailor made for road trips and late-night parties beneath a field of brilliant stars."

The band's first tour was different from most. A friend who'd introduced them to Robert Frank—whose collection of photographs inspired the band's name—was appointed drummer. He was allowed to play with only a plywood suitcase, which he beat with a soup spoon. The band set off on a meandering, quixotic odyssey that found them playing honky-tonks, rural bars, a Navajo radio station, and a wine cellar in an abandoned Coca-Cola bottling plant. Some of the venues hadn't hosted a live band since the 1980s.

"We had a passport to the hidden heartland of our country," recounts Jake. "What you learn exploring the nooks and crannies of any place, but especially this country, is that there's no type of person." Zac adds that "stereotypes break down at the individual level. What makes American music great is the same thing that makes America great—people who come from all over the world, each with a story, each with something to contribute."

About Tyrone Wells:

Listen | Watch Video

First things first. Let’s get this out-of-the-way. Tyrone Wells (I) wrote this bio.  I figured, “who better to talk about myself than myself?”.

I’m a lot of things in no particular order… a preacher’s son, a brother, a husband, a dad, a real estate lover, a major-label artist, an independent artist, an opener, a headliner, a very self-conscious dancer (think “Footloose”, only without the cathartic cutting loose), a gardener, a wanna be surfer, a person who has needed therapy, a pickleball player, a barstool theologian, and this next one kind of goes without saying because you’re here reading my bio.. I’m  a singer-songwriter.

I’ve written a lot of songs.  Probably approaching around 1,000 songs now… to me, when I wrote them, they were all good songs.  The luxury of time has informed me, some of the songs were maybe just good to me.  And some of the songs, inexplicably, have millions upon millions of listeners.  Meanwhile, others have tens upon tens.  I don’t know why, I just write them and set them free.

Ultimately, I’m trying my best to be honest, and write a song that I, and you can both love.  I’m gonna keep trying.  I’m so grateful that you have listened. Be it once, or be it a hundred times.  I’ve got big love for you.  I’ll be over here chopping away and reminding myself to be vulnerable. Peace and Love, XOXO Tyrone

About Ellie Schmidly:

Listen | Watch Video

Ellie Schmidly’s deep love of melody and singing was jump-started at a young age by watching Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music on constant repeat. Intertwining dreamlike melodies and uncommon instrumentation, Ellie creates personal music that pays homage to the many songwriters before her while incorporating modern sensibilities.

In her early twenties, Ellie moved to Nashville where Todd Gummerman, formerly of MuteMath, became her producer and co-writer.

Ellie has released two full projects Blossom & Bone (2018) and Balance & Composure (2020).

About Dead Horses:

Listen | Watch Video

A bustling boulevard in the heart of Milwaukee provides a colorful backdrop for the latest album by folk duo Dead Horses. Brady Street, which is due out on August 12, 2022, is Dead Horses’ first full-length release since their arresting 2018 record, My Mother the Moon. The last album charted on the Americana Top 50 radio charts for three consecutive months. The single “Turntable” accrued more than 35 million spins on Spotify and was also featured on the Amazon and Apple Americana playlists. The pair’s select media highlights include a Rolling Stone “Artist You Should Know” mention as well as profiles in Billboard, Noisey, and even independent global news publication Democracy Now!

For their fourth full-length press, the pair decided to stick to their roots and record at Honeytone Studios in Neenah. “We wanted to produce something that seemed true to us, so we opted for a closer-to-home approach,” explains Daniel Wolff. “The experience allowed us to dive in and out of the studio and really work with the individual songs and the overall feel of Brady Street. Because of this, I believe we created a set of songs that contain a wider variety of sounds and textures that we knew were possible for us but didn’t have the chance to accomplish yet based on our previous recording strategies.”

The new record kicks off with its title track, “Brady Street,” a song that took many months to finish, but one that Sarah Vos says she “never lost faith in because it seemed to really capture a mood I’ve never been able to through song.” The second and third tracks open to reveal Dead Horses’ evolution into more intricate places rhythmically and sonically, only to pull away to the live recorded, sparsely beautiful, intimate “Bird Over the Train.” Track 8, titled “You Are Who You Need to Be,” is a ballad meant to empower those who don’t fit into society’s gender and sexuality norms. The final tracks, “Under Grey Skies” and “Days Grow Longer,” leave the listener with an unexpected sound from the band. “The sound is more fun and lighthearted than what we usually create, unless you’re looking too hard,” Vos observes.

"I feel that Brady Street is a coming-of-age record for us – both musically and thematically,” Vos shares. “In some ways, Brady Street is an answer to My Mother the Moon. The latter was written and recorded in the midst of working through childhood traumas and first venturing out on my own. Brady Street is less naive, more gritty, more focused.” Brady Street takes the intimacy of nature and brings it into the oftentimes reckless city life. Instead of walks through the forest, the songs take the audience on walks through the city, past all the old churches and bars with rich histories. Both records are filled with songs of hope and the search for beauty, as well as compassion for others, especially strangers. Written primarily throughout the COVID lockdown,Brady Street turns inward and reflects the introspection many of us encountered over the course of the often-melancholy pandemic.

Since the band’s early days, Dead Horses has been something of a fluid project centered around Sarah and Dan but has also welcomed other like minded musicians for recording and touring. The band's seemingly dark name is a loving tribute to a former friend of the band who passed away due to struggles with opioid abuse. To this end, Vos says, “Our music is about hope and joy, all while sharing an important message that you’re never alone in your battles.”

The union of Sarah’s emotive songwriting and Dan’s intrepid bass playing transcends the singer-songwriter-with-backup-musicians paradigm. Dan’s adventurous musicality equally shines alongside Sarah’s songwriting sensibility. To date, Dead Horses has released three albums, two of which have been produced by Ken Coomer of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco, an Audiotree Live Session, three singles, and a five-song EP.

Touring has been essential to the group’s vitality. Choice live performance highlights include national tours with Mandolin Orange and Trampled by Turtles, opening for The Who at Alpine Valley, appearances at Red Rocks Amphitheater, and festivals such as Northwest String Summit, Red Wing Roots, Red Ants Pants, and Bristol Rhythm and Roots.

Sarah and Dan met during post-college crossroads moments. “Everything felt like this blank canvas back then, and we had these lifelong dreams of music,” Sarah recalls. “It all happened very organically.” Initially, Sarah and Dan resided in different musical spheres. Sarah was at a singer-songwriter vantage point, whereas Dan had previously played in punk bands, but the two quickly bonded over their shared adoration of folk music and upbringings in the church.

During those formative times, Sarah showed Dan songs she had been writing since high school. Inspired by her catalog of music, Dan decided to take on a new instrument, the upright bass, and set out to explore its melodic possibilities. Once together, the pair wasted no time in pursuing recording and touring opportunities, garnering a dedicated fanbase from the start.

Dead Horses is thrilled to support Brady Street with tours across the United States. Over the years, the road has become somewhat of a second home for Sarah and Dan. “Connecting with people at shows and being open together breathes new life into everything,” Sarah notes. “You can go somewhere and feel like a total stranger or a lost tourist at first,” as Dan perfectly describes the sensation of performing, “but once you hit the stage, you feel like you’re part of an all-too-familiar community.

About Will Overman:

Listen | Watch Video

Will Overman is a singer-songwriter based in Charlottesville, VA.

Will Overman’s genre-bending, storytelling approach to songwriting is a product of being born and bred on the east coast, finding love and being tested on the west coast, and finding a renewed passion for his art around the world.

The Charlottesville, VA based singer-songwriter’s music carries a maturity to match the up-and-down life he has lived over the past 26 years. From fronting a touring band while attending college, through-hiking the Appalachian Trail and traveling around the world for several months, to witnessing his parents divorce, standing by his wife as she fought and beat cancer twice, and going through tough financial situations while trying to make it as a creator; Will’s songs evoke the wisdom of an old soul with youthful optimism. Listeners can easily recognize a blending of genres such as Folk, Pop, Country and Rock n' Roll among Will’s music, bearing to mind the approach that legends Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, or James Taylor took in their prime, and how today’s singer-songwriter heroes such as: John Mayer, Jason Isbell, and Josh Ritter, have expanded on it.

About Young Mister:

Listen | Watch Video

Steven Fiore’s career reads like a legendary round of two truths and a lie: co-writing with Art Garfunkel, singing with Jeff Goldblum’s jazz band, more than 17 million Spotify streams. But it’s all true – every word of it. This unfiltered honesty ultimately powers Fiore’s YOUNG MISTER to be more than just pretty melodies, but rather profoundly moving storytelling.

Fiore got his break as a songwriter for Universal Music Group Publishing in Los Angeles, securing cuts for artists like Howie Day and Ryan Cabrera, but Young Mister’s sacred sense of introspection has afforded him an artistic output that hits far closer to home. Since launching the project in 2016, Young Mister’s trio of albums (2016’s self-titled debut, 2019’s Sudden Swoon and 2020’s This Is Where We Are Now) have received acclaim from fans and outlets like American Songwriter alike for an adroit, dreamlike balance of folk, Americana, and pop – all unwritten with wistful sentimentality and swirling, meditative lyricism.

About Abby Holliday:

Listen | Watch Video

Nashville based singer-songwriter, Abby Holliday, has been writing songs for as long as she can recall. The 24-year-old burgeoning young artist is best known for exploring serious themes without taking herself too seriously.

Bearing resemblance to the sonic qualities of female icons Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers, Holliday’s songwriting is a unique intersection of sad vibes, introspective lyricism, and modern pop-sensibility.

Holliday attempts to examine her external world as a skeptic—not a cynic— and her internal world with honesty—not cruelty. By way of the journal entries that she calls her songs, Holliday invites others to do the very same.

About Emma Peridot:

Emma Peridot is driven to create music that will capture the hearts of masses, all the while remaining unapologetic about who she is. Her sound is indie pop with elements of pop-rock and soul, and her lyrical content examines traditional themes of love, lust, angst and heartbreak, while also getting vulnerable about anxiety, self-doubt, and insecurity. As a young, LGBTQ+ pop artist, Peridot is an embodiment of self-assurance. Her purpose in making music is to create a ripple effect of that self-assurance and connect with all those who feel misunderstood.

About Kaitlin Butts:

Listen | Watch Video

Full of reflection, daydreaming contemplation, sharp wit, tough decisions in the midst of dire situations, rosy love, and beaming growth, What Else Can She Do finds Country music’s Kaitlin Butts in full bloom. Behind her flowing locks of auburn hair, Oklahoma twang, and a wry grin, grows a devastating storyteller and an equally demanding, radiant voice.

Following up her charming debut Same Hell, Different Devil and a diverse run of singles–the cosmic dancer “Marfa Lights,” the haunting murder ballad “White River,” the sweet tranquility of “How Lucky Am I,” and the enigmatic disco fever dream “White River (Remix)–What Else Can She Do has Butts delivering a collection of delicate, strong, and gallant characters and transformative storytellers.

What Else Can She Do is a visceral display of just how raw and mighty words and actions can be–and how sometimes, knowing when to walk away can be just as compelling as holding on. Inspired by the resilience and humility displayed by the women in her life, Butts’ latest is a welcoming nod and saving grace. Time and again, she demands to be seen and heard as an artist, storyteller, and woman.
