MOKB presents The Life and Times w/ Special Guest

Doors 8pm

Since August of 2005, The Life and Times has played over 200 shows in support of their debut full-length release Suburban Hymns (DeSoto) on US tours with bands like the Appleseed Cast, Murder By Death, Pelican, Mono, Sparta, Pinback, Engine Down, and William Elliot Whitmore. In June of 2006, they headlined a two week tour of Spain in support of an eponymous split CD/10", both of which with urgent post-rockers from Barcelona, Nueva Vulcano (ex-Aina).

The Magician EP (Stiff Slack), their fourth overall release, is a fad-free snapshot of a band that’s constantly morphing from a dragon, to a butterfly, to blinding white light, to a bird, to Godzilla, and back again, often within the space of just one song. RIYLs don't do the band justice from a recorded or live standpoint, but suffice it to say that the sound on the Magician EP puts them in company with artists like Pink Floyd, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Built to Spill and just a pinch of early U2. In October of 2006 they headlined a successful Japanese tour in support of The Magician for Stiff Slack Records (Mercury Program, 31 Knots, Shiner, Mates of State), and then a US/Canadian excursion in November and December of 2006. MOKB presents Horse Feathers

9:00 pm21:00

MOKB presents Horse Feathers

MOKB presents Horse Feathers

Doors 8pm

Some quick true/false facts about the band Horse Feathers and their new album, So It Is With Us:

1. The record was partially recorded in a barn in a beautiful pastoral setting in rural Oregon
(true, but hasn't everybody done this now?)

2. The band lives in Portland, OR
(also true, and they are consciously and unconsciously living breathing stereotypes just like the
ones portrayed in Portlandia)

3. Horse Feathers last album charted on Billboard by selling fewer records than they had in the past
(true, but maybe more a comment on the music industry as a whole?)

4. For this album, the band was influenced by the following: Pentangle, Talk Talk, Paul Simon, The Band, Van Morrison, John Wesley Harding era Bob Dylan, Desire era Bob Dylan, and Abner Jay (not what you would have guessed, right?)

Justin Ringle, the man behind all ten years of Horse Feathers, has the following to say about the making of this album, and the current state of his band:

"I wanted to stop. I did all the touring for my fourth record – "Cynic's New Year" – and ended the year 2012 disillusioned and defeated. I didn't touch my guitar for months, which was the longest I had gone in about 15 years. I thought that my career in music was over and wondered if I even wanted to do it anymore. After an arduous period of self-doubt and discovery, I finally arrived at the enlightened idea that maybe it should just be a little more fun. I had grown weary of talking to people after shows who said that my last record "helped them through their divorce". I have always been flattered by that sort of thing, but I realized what I wanted to hear was how my last record helped them "have a great weekend". If you have heard any of my previous records you will realize that this transformation from "divorce" band to "weekend" band would be a tall order. And it was! I wouldn't say we've become a "party band" overnight, but I certainly tried to change things a bit.

I enlisted friends to play with me that I trusted and had known for years. Along with longtime bandmates Nathan Crockett (strings/mandolin) and Dustin Dybvig (percusion/drums/keys), I threw Justin Power (bass/vocals) into the mix to have an honest to god rhythm section for the first time. With Lauren Vidal on cello and Brad Parsons singing harmonies, we played an impromptu show at Sasquatch and people liked it. We liked it, and the unusual feeling that I had after that show – which I think is referred to as "joy" – became something I wanted to experience again. I shared more. I stopped editing myself as much. The joy of playing live became its own reward, and I dared myself to allow that joy to shape the songwriting. In the end, I was able to let it go, and I don't own it anymore. Which also feels like joy. That's the way it was, and so it is with us."

FRANKIE'S FLICKS PRESENTS 'Strange Brew'

The White Rabbit Cabaret
and Frankie's Flicks present
'The Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew'

Join Frankie JJ Holliday Jr. as well as Bob & Doug McKenzie in a ridiculous tale of Hockey, murder, donuts and beer. And maybe slab of back bacon? And did we mention beer? At least, that's what matters most to Bob (Rick Moranis) and Doug (Dave Thomas) McKenzie when they bring the goofy lunacy of SCTV's "The Great White North" to the great wide movie indoors.

Doors 8pm, Flick 9pm, Only $5
Popcorn and Candy available for purchase plus drink specials!

Purporting to be loosely based on Hamlet, Strange Brew is about an evil braumeister at the Elsinore Brewery who has discovered an additive that when guzzled in beer, allows the drinkers to be easily controlled. Braumeister Smith (Max von Sydow) has a plan to take over the world with his new brew, and only the Great White hosers of the North, Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) -- with their plaid shirts, ski toques, fur-lined parkas, and addiction to beer -- can stop the dastardly plan, sober or not. There are several jabs at "hoseheads" and the business of movie-making, including an epilogue that critiques the film itself. Strange Brew found a cult audience with fans of the Second City comedy troupe, of which Moranis and Thomas were members.

ANGIE PONTANI / WWW.ANGIEPONTANI.COM // Click here to watch Angie Live!

Burlesque Queen, Angie Pontani, “The Italian Stallionette,” is one of few involved in the ecdysiast arts who shimmys and shakes on stages around the world, as well as carries her art into other fields and genres, including film and television. A child of New York and a key player in establishing NYC's burlesque scene, this bump-n-grind bombshell has spread the gospel of burlesque across the globe for over a decade. The New Yorker calls Angie, “first rate, the perfect centerpiece!” and rightfully so, since her signature acts and productions all set standards of style and class.

This international superstar’s ability to mix glamour of yester-years with contemporary sensibility has earned her burlesque’s most prestigious award: “Queen of Burlesque, Miss Exotic World 2008.” Aside from its substantial part in Angie achieving burlesque’s highest Angie has toured multiple runs in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. She has headlined the largest burlesque festivals in the world, including New York, Dallas, Milan, Rome and Helsinki. In 2009 she was named “Best International Touring Artist,” by The Naked City/Alternative Media Group of Australia.

Angie’s repertoire and show curating skills are frequently sought by discriminating clients including Lady GaGa, Campari, Esquire Magazine, Dos Equis, The Fox 5 Superbowl Party, Guggenheim, Donatella Versace and more. She worked exclusively with Hendricks Gin to create her glass bathtub act, which was the featured entertainment at many of their events throughout the U.S. In the midst of her wake, Angie has wowed celebrity fans the likes of Sting, Anthony Kiedas, Hillary Duff, The Strokes, Adrianna Lima, and Hugh Hefner.

As “New York’s Burlesque Queen” (ToscanaTV.com), Angie has appeared multiple times on the Conan O’ Brien Show and Gossip Girl. She was also featured in other New York productions: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, MTV’s The 50 Cent Project, Good Morning America, and The Today Show. Angie also appeared on The List (Canada), Lady Burlesque (IT), Burlesque Mania (IT), Good Day New Zealand (NZ), and Nightline (NZ). On October 24th, Angie will be featured in the Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett television special for PBS.

Always reaching for new fields and genres, Angie had a featured role in Michael Imerioli’s directorial debut film, The Hungry Ghost, and was also featured in the Italian television series, Lady Burlesque and The Poor Man’s Follies, an Italian film created for MTV. She was also a part of an ad campaign for Peter Werth (UK), X-Rite Photosystem with Brian Smith (USA), and Marlboro (worldwide). Aside from having been photographed by renowned photographer Ellen Von Unwerth for L’uomo Vogue, she has graced the covers and pages of many magazines including Pin Curl, Page Six, Glamour, Spanish GQ, Java’s Bachelor Pad and countless others. Angie even made a cameo in Eric Powell’s comic, The Goon (#36).

HELEN PONTANI// WWW.HELENPONTANI.COM //Click here to watch Helen live!

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Helen made her way to the Big Apple to fulfill her dreams of studying at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance and performing in modern dance companies. While working in movement, she developed a craving for false eyelashes, towering headdresses and glamour! As fabulous fate would have it, she became an original and honorary family member of burlesque pioneers, The World Famous Pontani Sisters. Since their inception, the trio of temptresses has changed the face of burlesque as we know it. Both with her sisters and on her own, Helen has dazzled audiences from the gritty big top of Coney Island to the glittering lights of Hollywood. Known as “the tapping tornado”, Helen was featured in the two year off-Broadway run of This is Burlesque. She has appeared in over a dozen national and international tours while also making frequent appearances on television programs like Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Gossip Girl, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy as well as having worked on programs with MTV, and VH1. This tap dance sensation has appeared in show stopping performances that have earned critical acclaim from the The New York Times, The New York Post, The Daily News, The Village Voice, and Time Out New York Magazine. One thing is for sure, with her flirtatious tapping, fabulous show girl costumes covered in rhinestones and fabulous feathers, Helen is sure to bedazzle you!

"Helen Pontani satisfies the craving for old-time Hollywood ingenue, with a dash of Betty Boop for good measure. A shuffle-ball-change never looked that sexy in Miss Roberts’ Wednesday afternoon dance class" -Edge NY

MAINE ATTRACTION // WWW.MAINEATTRACTION.COM // watch Maine live!

Maine captivates audiences every time she hits the stage. Coined the “Triple Threat of Burlesque” (singer/actress/dancer) she’s performed domestically and internationally, from MGM Grand*s Studio 54 in Las Vegas, Le Bus Palladium (Paris), Buddha Bar (Beirut, Lebanon) to Dragon-i in Hong Kong. Energetic, sensual, and wildly charismatic, her uninhibited rhythmic style and sense of humor blend an ensemble of samba, belly dance, African, improvisation and contortion, and pole dancing into a movement she’s defined as *Burlesque Fusion.*

Maine, known on stage as “The Maine Attraction”, landed her first professional dance job as a teenager for MTV's Fight For Your Rights Campaign. Since then, she has performed alongside a number of greats including legends James Brown and Lionel Richie, pop sensations Jessica Simpson and Pharrell Williams, and burlesque divas Dita Von Tease and Gentry de Paris. Her tenacious spirit has helped her become one of New York's most celebrated burlesque performers. A muse for numerous visual artists, she has collaborated with conceptual photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier and multimedia extraordinaire, Matthew Barney, the infamous DJ Tiesto and performed for exclusive fashion events hosted by icons Patricia Field and Marc Jacobs. Her ability to transform herself into a myriad of characters gives her the opportunity to play roles that are left of center, and fuse the elements of sex, comedy and drama effortlessly.

Most recently known for playing herself in Focus Features’ highly anticipated “Pariah”, Maine has also played leading roles in indie features: “Miente” (Cannes, Havana Film Festival), comedy-horror sensation “Nefertitty”, and Lower East Side coming-of-age drama, “My Normal”. Her role in “Million In The Mirror”, a PSA for breast cancer research, recently won The Viewers Choice Award on the Lifetime Channel. She was scouted as a featured burlesque performer for an episode on this season of Royal Pains (USA Network). This Fall she can be seen in the PBS Special with Lada Gaga and Tony Bennett as a featured dancer. Maine Anders evokes the type of naughty but cheeky glamour in her burlesque, stage and film performances that garner the well deserved comparison to the extraordinary Josephine Baker. She’s a rising star in musical theater, television and film and will continue to grace any stage where she can let her creativity ride.

For more information in Tonic 13 visit their website. www.tonicindy.com

Tonic Ball is a celebration of local music and art. It’s a night of fun and excitement. And it’s all for a good cause.

Each year we pick three iconic bands and/or musicians, ask some of our favorite local performers to cover a few of their songs, sell tickets to the show, and give all the proceeds to our favorite charity: Second Helpings. That’s Tonic Ball in a nutshell.

Tonic takes place each year on the Friday before Thanksgiving at four Fountain Square venues: White Rabbit Cabaret, Radio Radio, the Fountain Square Theatre, and The Hi-Fi. It wasn’t always that way—for the first few years, we covered just one famous musician/band and used Radio Radio as our exclusive venue. But too many people started showing up for just one room. So we expanded.

And we’ve continued to expand. Now, in addition to hosting music at four separate venues, Tonic Ball also features an art gallery, a silent auction, and a special event—Tiny Tonic—just for kids.

So what are we about? Great music. Scintillating local artwork. Entertaining the whole family. But most of all: feeding people in need. And every ticket you buy for Tonic Ball helps us take another crucial step toward eliminating hunger.

It's indie rock served on the rocks as indie singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist My Brightest Diamond joins Time for Three and the ISO for the Stella Artois Happy Hour at the Symphony. Join us for free food and drink at 5pm from Pizzology, Adobo Grill, 14 West, White Castle, The Libertine, American Harvest and many others before the performance.

Time for Three and Steve Hackman, Creative Directors

Click here to see the video of My Brightest Diamond's single "Be Brave" from her latest album All Things Will Unwind. She will perform this song with the ISO on January 19.

As impressive as her list of recent collaborators, Shara Worden's voice and arresting live performances have left audiences thunderstruck from the Sydney Opera House to Lincoln Center to the House of Blues. She's performed under the experimental-pop moniker My Brightest Diamond for the last seven years, and counts Bryce Dessner (The National), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), David Byrne, Laurie Anderson and each of The Decemberists among friends and fans. They are just a few of the many who've fallen in love with Worden's mystical voice and mythic storytelling.

Growing up outside of Detroit in a family of musical evangelists, Worden studied multiple instruments (her father is an acclaimed accordionist and mother an organist). She became equally passionate about classical and Motown, later pursuing a degree in Opera at the University of North Texas where she wrote and recorded original material for the first time. After moving to New York by way of Moscow, Worden recorded three albums before joining the ranks of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoisemakers. She then expanded her musical education further by studying composition under Padma Newsome (Clogs, The National), and turned out several scores for off-Broadway productions.

Worden's artistry seems to transcend music itself. On stage she evokes as much Martha Graham as Edith Piaf, and can be found collaborating with visual artists (Matthew Ritchie) and filmmakers (Matthew Barney, Murat Eyuboglu) alike. Where worlds are colliding, there is a Shara; a zeitgeist for a growing movement of experimental musicians eager to bend the borders of artistry and genre.

Having recently returned to Detroit, planted a garden and given birth to a son, Worden's latest offering, All Things Will Unwind, draws inspiration from the motor city itself. More folk inspired than much of her recent work the new album addresses the juxtaposition of life and death, class and race, pantries and politics—as heard through the mesmerizing lullaby of a new mother.

Weezer 'Pinkerton' Tribute / S.M. Wolf / Digital Dots *HALLOWEEN SHOW*

Playing the blue album tribute was quite a good time, so we decided to do it again. We're doing Pinkerton this time. You probably know this record, and you probably love it; and if you don't, sorry boutcha. Like before, this show is one and done. We're just going to learn Pinkerton, have a few beers, play it live for you, and then never do it again. But unlike before, we're doing this one in an actual venue, because you guys all singing together is louder than our PA at home. And because you drank the entire keg before we got to "Buddy Holly".

Our friends in S.M. Wolf and Digital Dots will get things rolling. They are the hottest things in town since the summer drought of 2012 when you couldn't water your lawn.

It's All Hallow's Eve. If you show up in costume, you'll save a couple bucks getting in -- which you can then spend on a cool bev for you or your significant other.
